Vegitarianism - More Than Just A Diet

It is a fact that, in the past, vegetarians were often seen as being somewhat eccentric or belonging to some odd sect. However, in recent years, the benefits of vegetarianism are becoming more and more attractive to many people. This includes not only the possible health benefits but also the economic benefits as well.

Vegetarianism is a preference that people have in which they choose to eat only vegetables and other plant products in preference to meat and other animal products. However, it includes more than just diet, involving a complete way of life. This life often includes yoga, spiritualism, homeopathy and other natural ways of living.

During the last century, there has been a significant increase in the knowledge of nutrition and the dietary value of fruits and vegetables. People have begun to steer away from the heavy meat-based meals and are leaning more toward the lighter, healthier and more balanced diets.

The reasons for choosing vegetarianism are varied but may be based on economic, ecological, spiritual, or emotional preferences. Often, people who become interested in such pursuits as spiritualism may switch to vegetarianism as a result of the teachings and the beliefs that are followed. Sometimes, of course, a person may simply dislike the taste of meat or other animal products.

There are five main groups of vegetarianism. The least rigorous are those vegetarians who eat white meat and animal products but will not eat red meat.

There are then the vegetarians who will eat no flesh at all but will eat other dairy products such as milk and cheese and they will also eat eggs.

Another group avoids all flesh but will eat dairy products such as milk and cheese. However, they will not eat eggs because they see eggs as flesh because they are considered as embryos.

Next are those who eat a diet of whole grains, cereals and vegetables as well as eating fish. This diet is part of a yoga lifestyle and is known as macrobiotics. People who follow the macrobiotic lifestyle believe that spiritual imbalance is the cause of disease and that this imbalance is restored by awareness of food origins. It is believed that many of the toxins in the body are a result of the consumption of flesh.

Finally, there are those who totally avoid any animal products or any flesh. These people are known as vegans. Those who follow the vegan lifestyle abhor the methods used in dairy farming and in meat production and see the eating of animal products and meat as adding to the cruelty endured by animals destined for the dinner table.

There are definitely some health benefits to vegetarianism because of the low saturated fat and high fibre associated with a vegetarian diet. This is particularly beneficial for heart and digestive health. However, plant protein is considerably lower than animal protein. It is therefore important that the vegetarian diet includes a variety of cereals, nuts, oil seeds, and legumes that contain high levels of protein.

Another health benefit is that vegetarians suffer less from obesity. In people who eat meat and other animal products, the fat accumulates in the coronary arteries, thus leading to an increased risk of heart attack. In vegetarian communities, heart disease is virtually non-existent.

They also have less problems with conditions such as constipation and intestinal diseases due to the high fibre in their diet. A vegetarian diet has also been known to improve diseases such as asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, and migraine.

Before you go rushing into vegetarianism however, it is important to consider other factors of health. When someone switches to a vegetarian diet, they commonly lose weight and this can lead to a feeling of lethargy. Weight loss can be particularly serious in someone who is already underweight.

There are also some conditions that are connected to veganism in particular. One of these conditions is called spinal ataxia which is evidenced by a stooped appearance with unsteady balance and a loss of sensation in the lower limbs. This condition is caused by a deficiency of vitamin B. Another serious condition is megaloblastic anemia, a blood deficiency also caused by a deficiency of vitamin B. it is therefore important to take a vitamin B supplement. This only affects vegans as vitamin B is found in eggs and cheese.

Plant foods also lack vitamin D but this can be found in sunlight. However, it is unwise to expose young children to too much sun. A vitamin D supplement can be taken in the form of drops.

Choosing a diet that is right for yourself and your family should be a carefully planned process, taking into account the pros and cons of each one. The main consideration, regardless of whether you choose vegetarianism or not, is to eat a diet which is properly balanced with the appropriate amounts of proteins, vitamins and minerals, carbohydrates and fats.

If you have been a meat eater and are considering the change to vegetarianism, it would be wise to first consult a dietician so as to avoid sending your body into shock. A gradual transition should make things more comfortable.

Understanding Macrobiotics

A facile glance at the recent newspaper or television show would tell us that indeed, we live in the time of the Diet. Bodies are no longer just bodies, but public property meant to be scrutinized for excess fat and poor skin. Diets abound, and diet programs are all promising salvation for those who can ?walk the walk? and ?talk the talk?.

In the United Kingdom alone, a very old and yet still wildly popular diet from the United States has caught the fancy of more than 3 million Britons. Fashion trends and eating patterns are not likely to change in the coming years, so we had better brace ourselves.

But the question that begs to be asked in our hectic, modern, diet-driven times is: do we still have a healthy and beneficial relationship with food? It seems that in our haste to lose weight and ?look the look?, we forgot all about nutrition and eating balanced, holistic diets.

Macrobiotics

Macrobiotics is just one approach to losing weight. There are literally thousands of diets out there just begging to be tried, but it seems that this one is the least commercialized and therefore one of the most believable. If something is too common-sense to be commercialized and marketed, then it must be examined whether it speaks the truth.

Essentially, macrobiotics is a simple avoidance of polar extremes. For example, if we can choose between red meat and lean or light meats, of course we go for the lean, light meats.

Avoidance is not really deprivation- because you always choose the lesser evil. Another example is between wheat bread and plain bread, which would you choose? If you are to examine their caloric content, then the choice would be quite easy: we drop the wheat-based bread and chomp on the flour-based one.

The approach sounds sensible and doable because it does not really require you to spend more money on food, nor does it emphasize any particular brand of food or weight loss plan.

Simply put, the macrobiotics approach emphasizes control and the importance of decision-making in what we eat. Eating lighter foods means we will end up being lighter. More fiber means we have a better excretory system and our bowel movements would be much more efficient.

On dieting

Since this approach is just one of many that you can choose from, then perhaps now would be a great time to remind ourselves that eating should primarily be a joyful activity- because there is pleasure involved.

Eating is actually pleasurable, which makes many people overdo it. Overdoing it causes problems- more problems than the human frame can actually handle.

If you really want to go into dieting, then now would be the time to evaluate the real reasons behind your weight gain. If it?s genetic, then you should consult with a doctor.

But if the weight gain is linked to something deeper, something that you wouldn?t want to talk about with family or your family doctor, then perhaps you should get the appropriate help for that immediately.

You never know, addressing your hidden anxieties might be the key to truly trimming your fat and getting that wonderful figure.

Fast And Easy Weight Loss Using Diet Programs And Diet Pills

If you're one of the approximately 67% of Americans that are wired into the internet, there's a good chance that sometime in the last 24 hours you've received at least one spam email promoting the latest and greatest diet pill or weight loss program. These diet products promise fast weight loss results, often without any effort or exercise. The never-ending promise of a weight loss pill that actually works keeps us hoping for eventual success.
At the same time, we're continually inundated with news of the most recent diet and how this time it's really going to work for us. The South Beach Diet, the Zone Diet, the Atkins Diet, the Low Carb Diet, the Cabbage Soup Diet, the Mediterranean Diet, the LA Weight Loss Diet, the Weight Watchers Diet, the Diabetic Diet, the Low Cholesterol Diet, the Prescription Pill Diet, the 3 Day Diet, the Low Fat Diet, the High Protein Diet, the Maker Diet, the Liquid Diet, the Grapefruit Diet, the Fad Diet, the Blood Type Diet, the GI Diet, the Vegetarian Diet, the Vegan Diet, the Detox Diet, the Dash Diet, the Candida Diet, the Gluten Free Diet, the Hollywood Diet, the Negative Calorie Diet, the 1200 Calorie Diet, the Raw Food Diet, the Phentermine Diet, the High Fiber Diet, the Macrobiotic Diet, the Science Diet, the Lemonade Diet, the Scarsdale Diet, the Diverticulitis Diet and the Fat Flush Diet are all examples of diet plans that promise to help us achieve quick weight loss.
Crash diets, weight loss pills and get-thin-quick gimmicks are more prevalent than ever, yet two-thirds of our population is still overweight. Even more startling is the fact that approximately one-third of the people in our country are clinically obese.
With all of these 'solutions' available to us, why is it that obesity trends have been alarming enough to prompt the Centers For Disease Control (CDC) to label obesity a national epidemic? Why are we still, as a nation, getting fatter? It's certainly not because we're not trying.
On the contrary, as a nation we're trying harder than ever to lose fat through diet and other weight loss products. As reported by CNN on 1-14-05 "Americans were expected to spend more than $40 billion in 2004 on weight control pills, gym memberships, diet plans and related foods, estimates Marketdata Enterprises, which studies the weight loss industry." Furthermore, statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate that 80 percent of overweight individuals and almost 87 percent of obese individuals are trying to lose or maintain their weight.
As reported by www.mygoals.com, 80 percent of Americans made a New Year's resolution in 2005. A whopping 26 percent of those resolutions were to improve overall health and fitness, making this the top category for self-improvement. This year was no anomaly, either, according to Amy O'Connor, deputy editor of Prevention magazine: "Fifty-nine million people every year resolve to lose weight."
So, is there a healthy diet product out there that will actually work? More than likely, the answer is yes. Although there is quite a bit of fraudulent weight loss merchandise on the market today, there is also (somewhere out there) a diet program and weight loss plan that will work for us. The challenge is to find that diet product or diet plan.
-> Repeat Business The diet and weight loss industry is a huge money making machine. According to Marketdata Enterprises, the annual revenue for the diet industry was over $30 billion dollars in 1990. A 2005 report by Stanford University documents that the consumer diet industry is now approximately $44 billion and growing. With all this money flowing around, haven't we as a country spent enough to fix the obesity problem once and for all?
How can the diet industry keep making more and more money, year after year? After all, $44 billion dollars is a lot of cash! The answer to that question is simple: repeat business. "98% of today's dieters gain the weight back in 5 years. 90% of those individuals end up gaining back more than they lost originally, due to the body's panic and efforts to stabilize metabolic rates over the long term" (Source: Stanford University; www.stanford.edu).
How do the diet-promoters get all that repeat business? The diet industry is a very unique enterprise in that, when it fails someone, they rarely blame the product. We are hard-pressed to find another business where, if the product doesn't work, we blame ourselves. All too often, after giving up on yet another diet program, we find ourselves thinking "Well, I guess I'm just not a good enough dieter." The tendency is for us to believe that we failed the diet rather than the other way around.
Apply this same logic to the automotive industry, and it soon becomes clear just how faulty this line of reasoning really is. What would happen if we take our car in to the mechanic for repairs and when we returned to pick it up he told us that although we still had to pay the bill, he was unable to fix the problem? Would we willing pay the bill anyway and just say "Oh well, I guess it's just a bad car?" Of course not! That would be ridiculous! But that's exactly what we do when it comes to diets.
-> One Size Does Not Fit All
What we need to realize is that there is probably a weight loss product or weight loss plan out there that will work for us, but it may not be the same one our friends or co-workers used. To find the best weight loss program for us, we absolutely must realize that one size does not fit all. What worked for our sibling or spouse may not work for us, and what works for us may not work for them.
It's probably safe to say that any diet supplement has helped somebody, but it's also true that no weight loss drug or plan has helped everybody. Each person has a unique metabolism and very individual nutritional needs, so no single plan will work for everyone.
-> How To Find The Right Weight Loss Diet
Some fat burner products on the market today do indeed work. Others are a complete rip-off. How do you tell the difference? Where do you go for accurate and reliable weight loss information?
First and foremost, talk with your doctor. Your own personal physician is likely to be honest with you and provide you with the facts. In addition, he or she can help you decide which weight loss supplement may be right for your personal situation.
There are also quite a few reputable organizations that provide accurate information on fat loss. Some of the better resources include:
-> American Cancer Society: www.cancer.org
-> Centers For Disease Control: www.cdc.gov
-> Diet Scam Watch: www.dietscam.org
-> Calories Per Hour: www.caloriesperhour.com
-> Harvard Medical School: www.health.harvard.edu
-> Mayo Clinic: www.mayoclinic.org
-> Shape Up America: www.shapeup.org
-> Calorie Control Council: www.caloriecontrol.org
-> President's Council On Physical Fitness: www.fitness.gov
When seeking a healthy weight loss plan, it's important that no food be strictly forbidden. There should not be any (or many) foods that we avoid completely 100% of the time. Why? Because that sets us up for failure! For example, if fudge is one of our favorites and we force ourselves to NOT eat fudge at the holiday party, then for many of us what we've done is set ourselves up for a binge fudge-festival.
Avoiding our favorite foods entirely is a too much self-deprivation for most people, and this sets us up for binge-eating. That's a recipe for disaster!
A much better approach is to enjoy foods in moderation. Watch those serving sizes! Enjoy and savor one piece of fudge! It's better to enjoy one piece of fudge and then stop than attempt to deprive ourselves entirely, only to end up eating the whole pan.
A good diet and nutrition program will also help us keep in mind the cost of the foods we eat. We're not talking about dollars and cents here, but the FITNESS cost of the food. When picking up that fudge, keep in mind what it will cost to enjoy it. When picking up a plate at the buffet table, let's take a moment to pause and think to ourselves: "The cost of this fudge will be an extra _____ minutes of exercise.....is that worth it to me?" Maybe. Maybe not. That's for each of us to decide on our own.
The point is that we should be conscious of our food decisions. No foods are forbidden entirely, but we do need to watch our portion sizes and carefully consider the cost of each food. Any good weight management program will incorporate these concepts and also will be approved by your doctor.
One such plan is the Running Start weight loss program offered by Pick Up The Pace. This nutrition program has six 12-week uses. -> How To Find The Right Weight Loss Supplement
Perhaps even more so than with weight loss diets, when searching for weight loss supplements it is critical to rely on the advice of your physician. The careful and supervised use of weight loss diet pills, combined with a sensible diet and regular exercise, can lead to quick weight loss and even easy weight loss (or at least easier than you expected).
Beware, however, the supplement scams on the market. It seems that every time we turn around we are blasted and bombarded with the latest, greatest, new and improved treatment for obesity. The gimmicks just keep coming. The sad truth is that few of these products work. Even fewer will result in real, permanent and lasting fat loss. A very few of the weight loss gimmicks on the market today are not only a consumer rip-off, but they are also quite dangerous.....even deadly.
As an example, consider the prescription diet drug Meridia. Does it help you lose weight? For some people, the answer is yes. For others, the answer is no. Can it kill you? The answer to this question seems to be a nervous 'maybe'. "The consumer group Public Citizen had petitioned the Food and Drug Administration for a ban, citing Meridia users who died of heart problems as young as their 20s and 30s. Even before Meridia was approved for sale, the FDA knew it could increase users' blood pressure, the group contended." (Source: www.cnn.com)
This week the FDA again refused to ban Meridia, even though whistleblower David Graham (an FDA drug safety officer) testified to Congress last fall that his agency was allowing five unsafe medicines to stay on the market, including Meridia.
Another example of a dangerous weight loss drug is ephedra. Ephedra was banned in the United States last year, in part due to numerous deaths attributed to this popular weight loss supplement. On April 14 2005, a federal Judge in Utah reversed the short-lived ban on ephedra. Within minutes, spammers were filling our email boxes with messages to BUY BUY BUY before ephedra was banned again.
Yes, ephedra will help some people lose weight. Yes, ephedra is safe for some people in low doses. But there is that little nagging fact that people have DIED and that their deaths have been attributed to ephedra use.....
Yet another example of a dangerous diet drug is steroids. For whatever reason, some people have decided that anabolic steroids are the best way to lose weight. Despite the well-documented and serious side-effects of steroid use, the lure of easy weight loss has caused many to throw caution to the wind. Perhaps the most concerning trend is steroid use among our teenage population: "Teens also listed steroids, growth hormone, amino acids and other potentially unhealthful products among those they'd tried in the previous year." (Source: www.cnn.com)
There do exist, however, some diet supplements that work and are also quite safe. Again, it is never a good idea to begin any supplementation program without first seeking the advice and approval of your doctor.
Three popular and dependable fat loss products designed to help you lose weight fast are ChromeMate, Lipotropic Plus and Super L-Carnitine.
Chromium helps insulin metabolize fat, turn protein into muscle and convert sugar into energy. ChromeMate, a unique form of niacin-bound chromium, is designed to optimize energy output. It accomplishes this by increasing the amount of glucose available for energy production nearly twenty-fold. It also is the "master" nutrient for controlling blood sugar, which in turn curbs sugar cravings. What's more, a study at Auburn University showed that ChromeMate reduced LDL cholesterol by an average of 14%. In fact, ChromeMate has been awarded a patent for lowering cholesterol.
The Lipotropic Plus Formula is scientifically-engineered to assist in the breakdown, distribution and burning (oxidation) of fatty acids. The active ingredients actually accelerate the fat-burning process by breaking down fat cells into smaller particles (emulsification) to be used for fuel during exercise.
Super L-Carnitine is essential for fat burning. I.B. Fritz and K.T.N. Yue, physiologists from the University of Michigan, discovered that Carnitine actually accelerates fat-burning. Without it, fat is unable to penetrate the walls of the mitochondria of the muscle cells. Carnitine is the shuttle that carries fat into your body's furnaces (muscles) to be burned for energy. Super L-Carnitine increases the rate of fat utilization for fuel.

-> Weight Loss Exercise
In this article we've been discussing weight loss diets and weight loss supplements. At this point it is essential that we add the third and most important component of overall health and fitness: exercise.
Exercise is one weight loss method that has never been banned, has never led to an investigation, and has never been been listed on a 'whistleblower' fraud report.
Exercise is the only path to health and fitness that virtually every doctor in the world agrees upon. Exercise is safe, effective, and brings many more benefits to our lives than diets or drugs ever will alone. Exercise is fun, invigorating, motivating and the single most powerful way to improve our life and well-being!
Yes, it's quite possible to lose weight without participating in regular exercise. However, diet and exercise combined will help us burn fat faster than we thought possible! Weight loss achieved by regular exercise and diet will be healthy weight loss because of all the benefits we obtain from regular exercise:
1. Strengthens muscles
2. Strengthens bone
3. Strengthens ligaments
4. Strengthens tendons
5. Strengthens immune system
6. Improves muscle tone
7. Improves endurance
8. Improves strength
9. Improves self esteem
10. Improves confidence
11. Improves balance
12. Improves physical appearance
13. Improves physical performance
14. Improves glucose tolerance
15. Improves circulation
16. Improves memory
17. Lower risk of heart disease
18. Lower risk of diabetes
19. Lower risk of cancer
20. Lower blood pressure
21. Lower cholesterol
22. Lower risk of stroke
23. Lower risk of osteoporosis
24. Lower risk of osteoarthritis
25. Lower requirements for medication
26. Lower risk of injury
27. Lower bodyfat
28. Helps with sleep disorders
29. Reduces post-operative complications
30. Reduces frequency of illness
31. Prevent Alzheimer's disease
32. Prevents muscle loss
33. Increases metabolism
34. Eases symptoms of menopause
35. Healthier pregnancy
36. Fewer problems with childbirth
37. Reduces ovulation problems
38. Prevents heartburn
Reaching your ideal weight via a healthy and active lifestyle has been found to lower health risks and medical problems in 90 percent of overweight patients. In addition to the exercise benefits listed above, fit people are eight times less likely to die from cancer than the unfit, and 53 percent less likely to die from other diseases. Fit people are also eight times less likely to die from heart disease.
Without a doubt, regular exercise is the most important piece of the puzzle and the best way to achieve rapid weight loss. Exercise is the safest way to achieve permanent fat loss, and when combined with a sound diet and nutrition program the body is turned into a virtual fat-burning furnace!
-> Conclusion
Fast weight loss is possible if we, under the supervision and approval of our doctor, combine a sensible diet with a diet pill or weight loss pill that is safe and effective. When we combine these three fat-burning strategies it is almost guaranteed that we will experience quick weight loss results.

2. Kate Hudson
The gorgeous daughter of actress Goldie Hawn gained 60 pounds during her pregnancy, which she needed to shed quickly before commencing on her next film. From her previous eating plan, she switched to a higher protein diet. She consumed high protein meals in smaller portions, and she combined this diet with a workout program that includes weight training and cardiovascular workouts. After getting a lot of flak because of her post-pregnancy figure, Kate removed all that baby weight in only four months and has gained abdominal muscles that gained the envy of many in Hollywood.

3. Oprah Winfrey
As one of the most successful talk-show hosts in the world, there is no question that Oprah needs to maintain her physical appearance for her millions of audiences. Known as one of those celebrities who are constantly battling weight gain, she has recently toned up her figure and has never looked figure in age 50 by combining a regular workout regime and diet plan. Oprah works out five days a week, spending 30 minutes on the treadmill and doing free weights. Her eating plan consists of legumes, fish, nuts, fruits and vegetables, chicken and dairy products that are low-fat. She limits her consumption of white sugar and flour. Oprah also credits her trim figure to her habit of not eating anything after seven in the evening.

4. Gwyneth Paltrow
A lot of people may find it hard to believe that the perpetually slim Academy award-winning actress actually needs to diet. Not the diet in the traditional sense (such as starving for to obtain a certain weight for a special weekend) but Gwyneth actually follows a healthy eating plan that resembles Oprah's, avoiding sugar and white flour. She usually follows a macrobiotic diet, eating foods like vegetables, brown rice, and lean meat. She also eliminated dairy from her diet, and does a yoga workout everyday.

5. Madonna
The pop star known as the Material Girl has always flaunted a body that is to die for, and has become a true fitness paragon over the years. She keeps herself in tip-top shape by having Ashtanga Yoga workout, and follows a strict diet that mostly shuns junk foods. She adopted a macrobiotic eating plan that includes organic foods rich in lean protein.

6. Claudia Schiffer
The bodacious German supermodel eats salad and steamed vegetables for dinner and eats only fruits before the afternoon. While on locations, she prefers to eat black grapes and drinks tomato juice and herbal tea.

7. Christie Brinkley
Long-time supermodel maintains her all-American good looks by being a vegetarian. She does not keep junk foods of any kind inside her home to make sure that she does not eat them when cravings occur. She snacks on sweet potatoes in place of candy bars, and she adopts a liquid juice diet when she needs to slim down fast.

8. Gabrielle Reese
The tall and sexy volleyball star did get plenty of exercise at her old job. However, now a days Gabrielle stays fit using a simple technique that many of us are familiar with....invented in the early parts the twentieth century by Joe Pilates. Gabrielle uses Winsor Pilates workout at home to keep her athletic shape. This is pretty profound when you think about it because she used to be in a highly active lifestyle for a long time, and yet she is able to keep her lean physique with a home workout course with a few simple DVDs and nothing more than a yoga mat.

Celebrities are just like ordinary people. They need to maintain their figures just like anyone else, and there is more pressure on their part since they are constantly in the public eye. Ordinary folks can have celebrity-like bodies, too, and by following certain diet and fitness plans, they can also look like red-carpet worthy.

The Pitfalls of a Raw Food or Vegan Diet

In this article, Dr. Jameth Sheridan shares candidly on the pitfalls of a raw food or vegan diet.

Renegade Roundtable with Dr. Jameth Sheridan. Dr. Sheridan is a naturopath and nutritional consultant. He and his wife Kim co-authored ?Uncooking with Jameth and Kim? and they co-own and operate Health Force Nutritional.

Kevin: So you?ve been at this for 23 years now. What are some of the most common pitfalls you see with a raw food or vegan diet?

Jameth: I think the number one pitfall that a raw fooder suffers from is, based on my 23 years of experience in raw food with countless tens of thousands of people, is if they?re a regular person, they eat regular foods, and let?s say they?re ill and they go raw immediately and they get well, I actually think that is ultimately a mistake. Because I see people when they ?fall off the wagon? so to speak, they fall off hard and they fall back to what they started from. So if I?m eating regular pizza and regular chicken and regular animal products, things like that, regular cookies, I fall off the wagon with raw, do things with family, I?ll just go ahead and eat those and then, you know, ?When I do that, and finish with my binge, then I?ll just go back to being raw.? And, I see a lot of people leaving raw foods or just being less healthy by going back and forth between those things. Because in raw the emphasis is so hard, and this is how I was taught too, on raw, that it forgets all the other things that are important, that make a raw food diet successful. And the number one thing that makes a raw food diet successful - all of a sudden, you are a whole food vegan.

If you become vegan, all of a sudden, if you stop eating animal products, cooked or raw ? which are not good for you, you had an immense increase in your health. Your likelihood to get osteoporosis has plummeted; your likelihood to get cancer has plummeted; and as a whole food vegan, your likelihood to get heart disease is almost non-existent.

Now whole food meaning, you?re not just eating white sugar, white flour, and hydrogenated oil ? all of which are vegan, but all of which are absolutely abysmal for you. A whole food vegan would eat things like millet, amaranth, quinoa, chick peas, you know, grains, beans, legumes, fruits, vegetables ? actual food, unadulterated by nature. You?re also eating an organic diet, when you tend to go raw, and organic is huge. These things are just additives, and you don?t just eat a whole food, organic, vegan diet, you also change completely the types of foods you?re eating. For example, you don?t go from eating, let?s say a frozen vegan pizza, cooked, to a raw frozen vegan pizza. You change your food completely. You go from eating, let?s say a frozen vegan pizza, or a regular pizza, to broccoli, and cauliflower, and fruits, and sprouts, and flaxseeds, and actual foods that are completely different types of foods. So the amount of nutrients you are getting by being a raw fooder, unless you?re fruitarian, is dramatically higher. You?re also usually consuming more water, unless you?re doing lots of dehydrated things, or lots of cacao, you?re more hydrated, which is immensely beneficial. Some diets include lots of raw vegetable juice, which is tremendously beneficial. And, you are also eating a lot of your food raw, which there is a benefit to actually having things raw too, but it?s just one of the many benefits.

In raw food teaching, there is often taught, usually taught, that there?s two categories of food: foods that are raw, and foods that are cooked, and there is nothing in between. So if you?re eating something cooked, well it might as well be cheese lasagna, rather than tofu lasagna, because in the raw food world, there?s really no difference. And I?ve seen that information devastate peoples health, and I seen it have people leave the raw foods movement who would be having, let?s say, 80, 90% of their health has improved, and like ?Wow, I love this.? And maybe 10 or 20% hasn?t, or 10 or 20% may have gotten worse, for some reason, some deficiency cropped up somewhere. And, if they usually talk to the raw food leaders or look at raw food text, they say, ?Well, there?s a problem with you, you?re cleansing, you?re this, you?re that, blah blah blah blah. You?ve got to stay raw, because all cooked food is poison.? Even the, you know, sometimes even with macrobiotic diets, which the healing macrobiotic diet is an all-cooked food, vegan diet, there are many people who have overcome cancer with that. Now you can?t overcome cancer on poison, and by no means am I an advocate of macrobiotics, by any stretch of the imagination, because I think macrobiotics is very depleting long term but far better than the standard American diet.

So I think it?s important to be a whole food vegan at some point, and get a good basis of that. And if raw foods is not working for some reason, don?t throw the baby out with the bath water.

Kevin: So some of the deficiencies that you encounter, with raw food are, maybe?

Jameth: I?m not saying they?re widespread, I just want to make sure it?s clear. I?ve met 20 plus year raw fooders who, for the most part, were following that regime, and who appear to be vibrantly healthy and they?re in excellent health, and I have no interest in trying to change their diet whatsoever. I just want them to live optimally and have the creatures of the planet live optimally and the planet as well. But for those who do, there?s some ? there?s a group of raw fooders ? I don?t know how to necessarily define the types yet ? but it might be, people who tend to be vata, it is, in my experience, don?t necessarily thrive on 100% raw foods. And it could be that there?s possibly deficiencies of a type of protein, because it?s not a deficiency of protein, because on raw foods, if you eat an appropriate amount of nuts and seeds ? and I think you can eat way too much of those ? but an appropriate amount, let?s say, one handful or so, you can get tons of protein doing that. But there?s some vata types, with my experience, take a long time to recover from working out, and it has a much harder time building muscle, just on nut and seed protein. And you can?t really eat enough broccoli, because broccoli has, I think 20 or 30% - protein, very high. But to get that much grams of protein from broccoli, it?s virtually impossible. To eat that many calories, you would actually have to juice a couple of cases of stalks of broccoli to get sufficient protein ? and you would get sufficient protein in that case. But broccoli?s also a cruciferous vegetable, and I love cruciferous vegetables for the liver detoxifying, for their anti-cancer benefits and they have some hormone balancing benefits too. They?re phenomenal foods. But raw broccoli, or any raw cruciferous in a large quantity, is really, really hard to process. It?s hard to deal with. So in cases like that, I?ve seen, if people move over to the legume family, it does not have to be soy beans. Soy beans are one of hundreds of different legumes. If you don?t like soy beans for some reason, just don?t eat them ? not necessary. Lentils, chick peas, mung beans, adzuki beans, things like that. Now you can certainly do those raw, but it?s ironic that one of the reasons that soy is indicted amongst the raw foods communities is because research on raw soy shows that it is very difficult to digest. It has enzyme and protein and other inhibitors in it that make it hard to deal with and hard to grow on, but that?s when the soy beans are raw. Now when you sprout any legume, any legume sprouted still has a lot of these anti-nutrients in them and it?s harder to digest and get everything out of a raw legume sprout. Now it?s almost ironic though, when you steam those legumes you do destroy all those enzyme inhibitors and the enzymes as well. But at least you?re enzymatically neutral now. You have not cooked it, or charred it, or burned it so there?s no lucocytosis raising of the white blood cell count, with steamed legumes or any steamed vegetable. For those people who don?t thrive on raw, if they do that, sprouted and steamed legumes, not lightly steamed you?ve got to steam it the whole way. Raw is just hard to digest. Most people don?t even make raw hummus anymore with raw chick peas. Have you noticed that?

Kevin: Yes.

Jameth: Because they are notoriously difficult to digest raw. I?ve made lots of raw chick pea in my day, lots of raw sprouted things and always the thing I used to do and still do is the stuff that?s left over, a dip or pate or something, well you throw it in the dehydrator and make raw chick pea burgers and eat them the next day for dinner. I did that one time and I ate the things in the morning, the raw chick pea hummus we had the day before, a whole bunch of them, I brought them to my seminar and man, I had a hard time even being in the seminar because I had so much volume of gas, that smelled so bad and I was in so much pain that I couldn?t actually socially be in the actual building. I had to walk outside.

Kevin: Wow.

Jameth: Now that was because I had a concentrated, dehydrated version. Now if you sprout chick peas, and chick peas can be hard to sprout. Sometimes they just go bad before they sprout. Now I don?t mean soak. So actually sprouted chick peas that are steamed then mixed with raw tahini, no reason in any way shape or form to cook your tahini, is phenomenally digestible. Really, really awesomely digestible and to get back, if you sprout your legumes, steam them and put a little bit of flax oil on them and salt them whether it be Himalayan salt, Celtic sea salt, a little bit of gluten free tamari or miso, some sort of good quality source of organic sodium, in my experience I have never seen that not take away someone?s craving or desire for flesh. That is so much better for you nutritionally than eating a piece of flesh, raw or not. By any measurement that science has currently come up including [indecipherable] photography, it?s far superior to do that than it is to eat raw flesh. So what I?m saying is rather than throwing the baby out with the bath water and being 100% raw, if you?re eating an animal product because you?re better off not. You?re better off eating a whole food vegan cooked food like sprouted, steamed, salted, flax oil, legume that I talked about. That?s my experience.

Using A Macrobiotic Colon Cleanse For A Longer Life

The word macrobiotic comes from the Greek words "great" and "bios" and the macrobiotic diet is thought to have originated in Japan in the nineteenth century. The diet is high in dietary fiber, rich in vitamins and low in high-fat foods, making it a great approach to colon cleansing. So, how does the macrobiotic colon cleanse work?

The human race has truly come a long way. Its no wonder our grandparents always say that we have it too easy. Sure, we have remote controls for everything, we have the Internet for easy information search and faster communication and our food is cooked and packaged for us, just waiting to be heated.

Everything is made for convenience and there is less effort required on our behalf to get tasks completed. But this comes with a huge price, and that is our health.

This convenience means that we lead more sedentary lifestyles and the volume of foods we eat that are nutritionally weak has increased dramatically. We are growing "weaker" and if not for the new discoveries in medical science our mortality rate would be soaring. In fact it is believed in some industrialized nations that this generation will be the first where the average age of death reduces rather than increases.

What is to blame for these issues? Well it is quite clear that we are all leading far more sedentary lives that even only 20 years ago. Our jobs do not require the physical labour that they used to, and most families have transport to get to work and school rather than walk to public transport.

Also, the foods that are in a "normal" Americans diet are nutritionally weak, they are often high in fat, sugars and additives, but low in essential nutrients and fiber.

This has led to a position that life threatening diseases that are environmentally caused (which is often a medical term for we bring it on our selves) are on the rise. Heart disease is the number one killer in the US, with a third of people estimated to have elevated blood pressure, and digestive disorders and conditions are said to effect about fifty percent of Americans.

Added to this that it has been recorded that the second biggest cancer killer (the first being lung cancer, usually another "environmental" condition) is colon cancer, with higher number of deaths each year than breast cancer and AIDS combined.

Underlying all of this is a pharmaceutical industry and medical research establishment investing billions into environmental medical conditions, but little resource being invested into reducing the causes of the problems before they arise. And we all know why this would be. If you can prevent a condition then there is no money to be made however someone with a medical condition can be a customer for life.

All that said, the research into how to treat environmental conditions is vital, but there is no getting away from the fact that the prevention of health problems need to lie with the "self". The bible put this aptly when is said "physician heal thyself".

So, let's get back to the macrobiotic diet.

The popularity of the macrobiotic diet has soured over the last 20 to 30 years, with millions embracing it.

This is a diet that is based on ingesting foods that are high in fiber and complex carbohydrates and at the same time low in fats, protein and sugar. In a macrobiotic diet, you will mostly be eating organic vegetables and whole grains.

It is made up of about 50% whole grain, locally grown vegetables and smaller amounts of beans, soups, sea vegetables, and also fish, fruits and white meat are allowed in limited amounts.

The aim of the macrobiotic diet, although not always explicitly stated, it to teach people to take responsibility for their own wellbeing.

There is no single diet for everyone, and the diet usually needs to take many things into account when being developed including sex, age, fitness and geography.

As the macrobiotic diet is high in fiber rich food, which is a substance that helps maintain colon health and clean the colon regularly, it can be an effective alternative to colon cleansing products if used over time.

As well as this, many of the foods are organic, nutritionally rich and will therefore help boost the immune system and encourage a healthy gut flora.

A macrobiotic colon cleanse will not only over time give you a cleaner colon, a longer life and a rejuvenated body, but it will also generally help a person lose weight as an added bonus.

The Latest FAD Diets

The Latest Dieting Trends

It seems like every time you turn on the television they’re talking about the latest diet trend and newest scientific study that proves this or that helps you lose weight the most effectively. Then six months later you’re learning the diet is actually harmful and the newest diet is the way go because it’s the complete opposite. If the first diet tells you carbohydrates are evil and you should eat all protein the next diet will tell you carbs are good and too much protein is bad. It seems like you can never win. But not all diets are bad, in fact there are some really good health and fitness plans out there. Here are the latest dieting trends, whether or not they work for you is debatable because what works for one person may never work for another simply because of body chemistry. So the only way to know for sure if a diet will work is to try it.

The Biggest Loser Diet

Inspired by the hit television show which pits people against one another to lose the most weight in hopes of winning a huge cash prize, this diet focuses on daily meal plans, grocery shopping lists, fitness programs and keeping a journal to track your progress and keep you motivated. While at home you may not be competing to win a cash prize you can set your own goals and thus create a prize for yourself if you reach such and such a goal.

Macrobiotic Diet

This focuses on a simple meal plan system that consists only of organic foods such as whole grown oats, wheat, and fresh vegetables and fruit. According to the macrobiotic diet you are to avoid all processed food and within five days you can lose an average of five pounds as well as lower your cholesterol. The macrobiotic diet also claims to prevent and treat over two hundred illnesses and conditions. This is because of the natural products that promote natural healing and overall health from the inside out.

The Nutrisystem Diet

The Nutrisystem diet is just like that of the Weight Watchers, South Beach and Atkins type diets that focus on a certain percentage of daily intake coming from specified food groups. All these diets all have a line of products they promote and sell which are supposed to conform to these standards and make weight loss more effective and efficient. The problem with a lot of these is that the distribution of calories, fat and such don’t work for all body types. They are also quite expensive and hard to keep up with when out in the real world. The Nutrisystem diet focuses on a reduced calorie diet consisting of 60% carbs, 20% protein and 20% fat.

The Primal Diet

The primal diet is a diet that I actually agree with and do myself. The basis for the diet is that you should eat like a caveman from 10,000 years ago. All of the newer man made foods are contributing to our obesity and health problems.

Focus on lean meats like chicken, fish, pork and steak. Also you should lots of fruits and vegetables. Basically if it doesnt come from an animal or the ground, don't eat it. Also stay away from all foods that are processed.

The Very Simple Basics Of A Macrobiotic Diet

Amacrobiotic diet is a diet formulated by the belief that food, and the quality of food, has an affect on a person's life on a greater extent than most people realize. Practitioners of a macrobiotic diet believe that food has an affect on health, as well as happiness and well being. Those who follow a macrobiotic diet believe that natural foods with little to no processing are the best choice of food. In addition, they believe in using traditional methods of cooking and they enjoy cooking for themselves, as well as for family and friends.

Literally translated, macrobiotics means "great life." Physicians and philosophers from around the world have associated macrobiotics with living in harmony with nature while eating a simple and balanced diet. In the 1920's, George Ohsawa, who founded the modern form of macrobiotics, claimed to have cured himself from a serious illness by changing his diet.

Ohsawa believed in the Chinese philosophy of Yin and Yang. They yin represents outward centrifugal movement and the yang represents inward centrifugal movement. Yin and yang are always opposite, with yin being sweet, cold, and passive and with yang being salty, hot, and aggressive. In a macrobiotic diet, the yin and yang need to be kept in balance for good health.

Because this balance of the yin and yang is at the core of the macrobiotic diet, foods are all classified as one or the other. This division is in accordance with their properties, tastes, and effects on the body.

Grains and vegetables are not strong in either yin or yang. Therefore, they are especially important in the macrobiotic diet. These more neutral types of foods make it easier to maintain balance of yin and yang and these foods that are extremes in either yin or yang or to be avoided in the macrobiotic diet.

All foods included in the macrobiotic diet must be organically grown. Whole grains, such as barley, brown rice, oats, millets, rye, core, buckwheat and whole wheat are thought to be the most balanced of foods in a macrobiotic diet. Therefore, these foods make up about 50 to 60% of the macrobiotic practitioner's diet. Whole grains are the preferred type of grain in a macrobiotic diet, but small portions of bread and pasta derived from refined flour are acceptable.

Fresh vegetables make up approximately 25 to 30% of the macrobiotic diet. Broccoli, cabbage, kale, cauliflower, collards, turnips, mustard greens, turnip greens, radish, onion, butternut squash, acorn squash, and pumpkin are the primary vegetables to be included in a macrobiotic diet. Iceberg lettuce, celery, snow peas, mushrooms, and string beans are to be included in the diet only two or three times per week. In a macrobiotic diet, these vegetables are to be prepared by either being steamed lightly or being saut้ed with unrefined cooking oil, ideally corn oil or sesame oil.

5 to 10% of the macrobiotic diet consists of sea vegetables and beans. Chickpeas, adzuki beans, tofu, and lentils are the recommended types of beans. Sea vegetables should be included in the diet. These vegetables are rich in vitamins and minerals.

Soups and broths make up about 5 to 10% of the macrobiotic diet. Soups should contain a soybean paste. They also should contain beans and vegetables.

In a macrobiotic diet, a few servings of seeds, nuts, and fresh fish (such as flounder, halibut, and cod) each week are acceptable. Acceptable sweeteners in the macrobiotic diet are barley malt, and rice syrup, which is a sweet drink made from rice. Plum and brown rice vinegar may also be occasionally used in the macrobiotic diet. Tamari soy sauce and sea salt can be used to add flavor to soups and to grains.

A person following a macrobiotic diet only drinks when thirsty. The only drinks that are generally accepted in a macrobiotic diet are teas, which are made from dandelion greens, roasted grains, or the leftover cooking water from preparing soba noodles. Teas containing caffeine or aromatic fragrances are unacceptable. In addition, all cooking water and drinking water must be purified before use.

Foods such as eggs and dairy products are thought to have strong yang qualities. Similarly, chocolate, refined sugars, tropical fruits, coffee, fruit juice, soda, and hot spices are believed to contain strong yin qualities. Therefore, all of these foods are avoided in the macrobiotic diet. All foods with artificial flavors, artificial colors, and preservatives are also avoided.

The macrobiotic diet is more than just a diet, it is a lifestyle, and it embraces a simplistic diet bound closely to nature.

Macrobiotics: Tips And Advice On Starting A Macrobiotic Diet

It is always not so easy starting out on something that will radically change your lifestyle, most especially when it becomes a part of your regimen. Switching to macrobiotic diet is not that tough. As long as you have the will and determination to do it. Macrobiotics is actually just using our commonsense to eating. Macrobiotics is a sensible alternative to the over processed and devitalized foods that are available in the market and fast foods.

Macrobiotic diet focuses on these balancing acts of intakes. Yin foods, among other things are ones that grow in warm climate, foods that contain more water. While Yang foods are ones that grow in cold climate and are dryer. Remember "Taking all things in moderation"? "Anything excessive or too much is bad"? Macrobiotics is focusing on eliminating unbalanced diet and promoting higher well being, it also teaches us to chew our food completely and eat only when hungry.

Some food that we have gotten used to are strictly prohibited in macrobiotics, because as we say, it is unbalanced in its own way. They are extreme. Either too sweet or too salty, hence junk foods. Foods that you should stay away from are chocolates, candies and soda, refined foods such as white sugar or flour, processed food such as sardines, corned beef, and other canned food, tropical fruits, poultry and dairy products, eggs, butter, caffeinated products specially coffee, and other products that has preservatives in it.

But there are so many benefits of macrobiotics that changing your taste bud preference is worth it. If paired together with exercise, such as yoga, macrobiotic diet can make you lose weight dramatically, because this diet is rich in fiber and low in saturated fat and reduces the risk of diseases that is associated with fats such as heart attacks and strokes, heart diseases and high cholesterol. Although not proven yet, macrobiotics helps and even prevents AIDS and cancer. Of course it's a rule of a thumb that a healthy diet and healthy lifestyle leads to a disease free life, as our body has it's own self heal properties, and all we have to do is to activate our body's immune system to perform well it's duties by cleansing him of all the impurities we fed him in years of our lives.

Macrobiotic diet is not a medicine to cure your onset illness but a lot of illnesses are brought about by wrong diet and excessive intakes of unnecessary food in our body, thereby resulting into branches of different complications and sickness, correcting all of these and switching to a more sensible and balanced diet such as macrobiotic diet and lead a healthy lifestyle together with exercise can surely shun away troubles brought about by modern day diseases. A complete turn around of diet means a complete turn around of illness into wellness. Macrobiotic diet is a way of life.

What Is Macrobiotic Diet?

What is a macrobiotic diet? It is a diet designed with a view to improve our health and well-being because it is believed that what we eat has a great impact on our lives. Following a macrobiotic diet means eating food that is not processed and thus conventional methods of cooking are used. Eating a simple and a well balanced diet is what a macrobiotic diet is all about. In the 1920s, George Ohsawa, the founder of modern day macrobiotics asserted that he was cured of a grave illness by modifying his diet. What macrobiotics means is 'the great life' and it means living in harmony with all of nature that surrounds you.

Macrobiotics is very akin to the Yin and Yang theory of the Chinese. Yin and yang work in different directions. A balance between the two is to be maintained for good health and this is the essence of a macrobiotic diet. While yin is passive, sweet and cold, yang is more aggressive, saline and hot. Perfect health means a perfect balance between the two.

Foods vary in their tastes and properties. So grains and vegetables are important in a macrobiotic diet because they are classified as neutral foods, not having very strong yin or yang. Light foods are good for maintaining a balance between yin and yang, foods that are heavy are preferably avoided in a macrobiotic diet. A macrobiotic diet consists of organically grown grains and vegetables. Foods in their natural form are the best. Unpolished rice, oats and other kinds of millets are considered to be the basis of a balanced diet. Though whole grain is the preferred choice, small quantities of products made from refined flour is allowed.

One third of the macrobiotic diet consists of fresh and organically grown vegetables like cauliflower, broccoli, collards, onion, pumpkin, kale, etc. Vegetables should not be over cooked as they lose their flavor. They must be parboiled, steamed or fried lightly in unrefined corn or sesame oil. Sea vegetables rich in vitamins and minerals should also comprise a small portion of a macrobiotic diet. Beans like lentils and chickpeas should also be included. Soya in the form of tofu and soya used as a paste in soups and broths with beans and vegetables are good additions.

Seafood, dry fruits and pulses should also form a part of a good macrobiotic diet and should be consumed weekly. Malt extracted from barley and rice syrup are good examples of sweeteners as is plum or brown rice vinegar. Food flavorings used should be pure and natural like sea salt and Tamari soy sauce.

Drinking water or any other beverage in a macrobiotic diet is recommended only when one gets thirsty. Teas that are strong and have caffeine must be avoided whereas teas prepared from roasted grain and green teas are acceptable. Water used for drinking and the preparation of food must be filtered and clean.

Poultry and milk, cheese or clarified buttered must all be avoided as they have very prominent yang properties. On the other hand citrus and other fruit juices, spicy food and caffeine in any form must be avoided as they have very prominent yin properties. Processed foods must not be consumed as they have preservatives and unnatural flavors. You must remember that a macrobiotic diet is not just a diet - it is a way of life.
